Principles of Diets
Most credible diets
are based on a few basic principles of healthy
eating. These include:
1. A Balanced Diet: A healthy diet is a balanced
diet. It should contain foods from all the food groups.
2. A Diet Low in Saturated Fat and Low in Refined Sugar:
We don't need saturated fat or refined sugar - these are what are causing
our weight problems. However, we do need fat and carbohydrates.
3. Good Nutrition in our Diets: We need to make sure
that even though we are dieting, we are being as nutritious as possible.
Being nutritious includes:
- GOOD CARBS
Everyone, no matter their weight, needs
a nutritious diet rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber. Good carbs,
including vegetables, fruit, potatoes, whole wheat bread, pasta, rice,
oats, beans, soy and whole grain cereals, will provide good nutrition.
In particular, vegetables contain a range of phyto-chemicals, enzymes
and other micronutrients that are essential for an efficient metabolism
and a healthy diet.
- GOOD FATS (In reduced amounts)
Your fats should not come from animal
fats, but mainly from mono-unsaturated or polyunsaturated food sources.
But keep in mind that fat contains more than twice the calories of other
foods, and it should therefore be eaten in reduced quantities if you
are attempting to lose weight. Choose very lean or low fat foods when
eating animal fats.
- GOOD DIET SHOPPING & COOKING HABITS
To be successful with a diet - you should
learn about making healthy food choices rather than just eating what
the diet tells you to eat. As well, you should learn good shopping habits.
Diets that tell you everything that you should
eat without teaching you how to know what is good to eat will not help
you out in long term weight-loss.
